How do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

Anti-wrinkle products work by temporarily blocking the impulse that the nerve sends to the muscle to contract or tighten. Your muscles contract or tighten in response to these impulses during different facial movements. Repeated contractions of these facial muscles, such as with frowning, squinting or smiling, are what cause wrinkles.

What is a “Unit”?

A unit is a measure of an anti-wrinkle product. The number of units required to deliver the desired effect depend upon the product. Your skin care professional will discuss the details of these differences with you during your pre-treatment consult.

Is it Painful?

Our Doctors and Specialist Nurses are trained to provide the most comfortable experience possible. However, everyone’s perception of ‘what is painful’ is different and, as anti-wrinkle injections are not administered under any form of anaesthetic, it is impossible for anyone to guarantee an absolutely pain free experience. However, generally speaking, a typical treatment is not found to be too uncomfortable. Ice is often used as it has a numbing and soothing effect. It also helps to reduce bruising.

Is There a Natural Alternative?

Of course but you cannot reverse the natural side effects of ageing. Microneedling, which is both natural and cost effective, is a good alternative. Prevention is better than cure and nothing replaces good skin care. Being sun smart, wearing sun cream, being smoke free, keeping hydrated and wearing a hat when out in the sun are the best ways of ensuring long lasting, healthy natural looking skin.

Is There Any Downtime?

Generally, no, but you may experience some facial redness and bruising. You can, however, apply make-up after your treatment. We recommend use of mineral make-up. We advise no exercise, or any other activity that would cause excessive sweating, for 24 hours.

What are the Side Effects??

Everyone’s experience is different, however these are some of the most common side effects:

Is is Permanent?

No, it is not permanent. The medication is naturally broken down and removed by the body over a few months. If you stop having regular injections, your body will simply return to its natural movement prior to treatments.

How Long Will the Treatment Last?

The effect of treatment will last an average of betweem 3-  5 months.
